The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
