Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
