Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
